There’s Mo Magic in Joburg this week

Mahommed Moorad, better known as Mo Magic, has just started his run at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square in Sandton, a wonderfully intimate venue. The show opened on 27 August to a standing ovation and runs to 31 August, with 8.15pm shows on all days and a 6pm show as well on the Saturday. You can book here.

Mo says that his fast paced, interactive shows contain magic with ordinary, everyday objects. He’s toured internationally and is a world class performer.

What to expect when you get there? You can expect some sleight of hand, a little bit of trickery, a lot of magic and jokes – yes there’s audience interaction but it’s not ‘nasty’ – and Mo will take good care of you! I’m not going to divulge any more than that – you’ll find out when you see the show! Treat yourself to a feel good spoil.

Mo, like any human, likes to feel Joy and Delight, and that’s the feeling he likes to impart to his audiences, whether they’re in live theatre, TV or even radio!  And that’s the feeling you’ll leave his show with.

When I found out that Mo is a qualified electronic engineer and started his working life in project management, it resonated immediately with me, as a worker in a rather menial industry (blogging is not my full time profession, worse luck!) who often would rather be doing something creative. When Mo realised he wanted to be on a different journey, he, during a period of self-reflection in university sought divine guidance. He doesn’t only like feeling joy and delight, he also likes spreading it to other people, so that’s exactly what he decided to do.  (Can you see now why he’s a perfect fit for my blog with the premise of ‘tweak the golden thread’?) After speaking to the universe, whilst working with a friend on their electronic design project, he saw magician David Blaine on TV. Mahommed became inspired and MO MAGIC was born.

Mo did various private events and spent a wondrous two years providing magical (pardon the pun!) entertainment at the Mugg and Bean Musgrave (Durban, South Africa). This novel concept is very popular abroad and was a refreshing innovation in South Africa as local restaurants usually mostly support musical acts. The popularity ensured that the Mo Magic Brand continued to grow. This opportunity had small beginnings – one evening in March 2005 Mo had been at the coffee shop and performed a piece of magic for the waiter, and then the manager who was so impressed he asked him to come in weekly.  As Mo told me “when the student is ready the master appears”.

Mo is the Brand Ambassador (Arts and Culture) for Child Welfare in Durban. Their motto is “Giving Childhood Back to Children” and he understands the meaning behind this, having come from a difficult background himself.  He wants to show kids that they can be successful even though their current situations may be difficult. And he helps his corporate (and other adult) audiences reconnect with their own inner child.  Which leads us onto the next subject – what do you do if you yourself want to be a magician? Mo has developed a DVD called “Learn Magic with Mo Magic” which normally retails for R200 but will be available for R100 at his shows, and will soon be available on his site here. He had identified a gap in the market for this skill being taught at a high level, and now, first class tuition in magic is available.
